Our rushing around, our business, our
constant caretaking, and compulsive working
leave little or no time for anyone or
anything to enter. Yet when we stop to
notice, a power greater than ourselves is
always there.

| Thirty Minutes a Day? Better think 50. |
 |
|
Headlines across the country splashed "New
Federal Guidelines for Exercise Increased to
One Hour" following the release of the
Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on dietary
guidelines last September. The guidelines,
which call for 60 minutes of physical
activity each day, twice the recommendations
of ACSM/U.S. Centers for Disease
Control (CDC), and the U.S. Surgeon General,
caused confusion among the general public,
many of whom do not meet 30 minutes of
recommended activity a day.
"By raising the recommendation to 60 minutes
of moderate physical activity per day, the
report has the potential to dissuade the most
sedentary from initiating a pattern of
moderate physical activity that would be a
healthy lifestyle change, and could lead to
additional increases in total physical
activity," said ACSM President Howley
Greater amounts of physical activity than
currently recommended may be necessary to
prevent people from gaining weight, and to
help them lose weight and keep it off,
according to updated guidelines issued by the
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
"In the midst of a genuine crisis in
Americans' health, related to what we eat and
how little we move, these guidelines are
meant to provide an understanding and
clarification of the role of physical
activity and its relationship to weight," Dr.
Joseph E. Donnelly of the University of
Kansas in Lawrence and chair of the advisory
committee noted in a statement.
